Happiness is not the absence of problems, it’s the ability to deal with them.
I saw this quote online a few days ago believe it or not. Having no clue who Steve Maraboli is it’s just the words that meant something to me. (I did google him and apparently he’s an author/radio commentator.)
I have had an ongoing battle with depression since my early teens, and while it’s taboo to talk about it’s a pretty real subject; you can ask anyone that has to deal with it. Going somewhere so dark really isn’t my style, especially since I like to focus mainly on the boys here. But, it’s a real part of my life, and it’s a lesson that can apply to just about everyone on the face of the planet.
When I try and focus on all the light and blessings in my life, the depression eases up some. And by focus I mean devote all of my energy to my blessings! Of course even then, there are times when all the good just makes me feel even more guilty for feeling crummy. But, about 75% of the time it does help. And since the boys keep me so busy sometimes I just don’t have time to think about things.
That being said, being problem free is never going to happen in my lifetime. Ever. So overcoming my obstacles, focusing on the good, and dealing with the problems one at a time; those things allow me to live my life as close to depression free as possible. It’s a life lesson that I’m thankful to have learned so early in my life, and I can only hope it helps others too.
